At age seventeen, Australian native Isabel Lucas was shopping for groceries in Cairns, a tropical rainforest town by the Great Barrier Reef. “I was under a mango tree at an organic market,” explains Isabel, now 24. “This woman came over and asked if I was interested in modeling. I said, ‘No.’” But the two began chatting and the woman turned out to be an agent who represented actors, not models, and they began a working relationship.

Kakadu, it turns out, is an Aboriginal community where Lucas lived for a year during her seminomadic, bohemian childhood. “My best friend was Aboriginal,” Lucas says. “She taught me about ‘bush tucker’—the food of the land, the different things you could eat if you got lost in the bush, like grasses and berries. There’s this tree called the billygoat plum—the fruit is quite nice. It’d be a whole different story here. I don’t recognize any of these plants,” she adds, surveying the local foliage.

Daytime darling: Lucas earned her big break on the venerable Aussie soap opera Home and Away, on which she starred for more than three years. After growing accustomed to her swelling fame Down Under, “I dyed my hair dark, dark brown and jiffied off to Europe,” she says. “I think that helped me slip under the radar.” Her transformational coming of age … occurred after she played a bit part in The Pacific, the HBO mini-series produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The role landed her an audition for this summer’s Michael Bay mega-actioner, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen—she’ll play Shia LaBeouf’s Princeton-coed girlfriend.
